A Year of Expectation!

Writer's picture: Rose DRose D

The baptism of Jesus and the beginning of a new year both give us a sense of excitement and hopeful expectation. I can try to be indifferent to a new year, but I can’t help it, I am always excited about the unknown and the possibilities of what another year may bring. Similarly, whenever I witness a baptism at mass, I always end up with a huge smile on my face. Baptism is the beginning of a lifelong journey with Christ that can transform each of us.

I often wonder how the people in Jesus’s time could remain hopeful. How could they be hopeful after wars, sickness, and death? Why did they not give up hope waiting for a Messiah that had not appeared after so many generations had come and gone. Maybe that same sense of hopefulness the Israelites had continues with us today. In our own lives we persist through sickness, divorce, job loss and innumerable disappointments, and somehow, we endure and remain hopeful. Years ago, when I was going through a difficult time, a friend said to me, “despite what happened, you got up out of bed every day and kept going. Not everyone would have done that.” I sat there for a moment and responded, “No one told me that staying in bed was an option!” And so, as it is with most of us, we get up and keep going like the Israelites. Our journey with Christ is not always what we expect or want it to be. We want a smooth road with no sharp turns or steep hills, but we know the turns and

hills are part of the transformation. Each year with the celebration of Jesus’s baptism and the beginning of a new year, we have cause to hope for transformation in our own lives, our church community, and the greater world. We believe that better days are ahead, and that Christ is with us in our happy and sad moments.
